Elizabeth (nee Hornby) stitched this most distinctive needlework sampler on a linen ground. Condition is exceptional, with amazingly vibrant colours & no discernible areas of loss to the stitching or ground. The letters, verse & paired floral & bird motifs are very skilfully executed being defined by a strawberry border to the top. Period c.19 rosewood veneer frame. Some provenance.
Additional Comments
The quality black, crimson & green thread used by Elizabeth provenance & fine standard of this George III piece suggests a fairly wealthy origin. Its motifs & moralistic, archaically expressed verse are typical of the period. However, the unusual verse, with cute grammatical & spelling mistakes, appears to be Elizabeth’s personal take on the 5th Commandment!
As indicated above, this large sampler comes with some provenance – see images. The contemporary 19th century period frame (plus 19th century glass, gilt slip & hanging eyes) - itself a fantastic antique - has been supplied by us. In our view, the quality & super condition of this quirky, beautiful sampler - in addition to the fact that it was completed some 215 years ago by a girl of just 6 years old - make it a very desirable, standout example of samplers from this period.
Conservation & Restoration
We have prepared Elizabeth's stunning sampler for sale by taking it from the dilapidated, tatty later frame in which it was acquired, then removing the surface dust using a conservation vacuum cleaner. It has then been stitched onto complementary fresh linen which rests on cotton wadding glued to an acid free mount. All components of the resized sourced period frame have been thoroughly cleaned & the veneer waxed. Finally, the sampler has been re-presented in its frame behind a piece of new softwood backing secured by stainless steel panel pins & sealed with self-adhesive picture framing tape. The piece is ready to hang using a new (doubled) picture string attached to the frame’s original period eyes.
Framed Dimensions (W, H & D): 55x56x4.5cm
