Description
Margaret has stitched this fine, striking silk needlework sampler on a gauze ground. Its condition is exceptional, with still amazingly vibrant colours & no stitch loss or damage. The upper & lower case lettering is very skilfully executed & surrounded by an unusual trailing floral & leaf border. ‘The Golden Mean’ is by William Cowper (1731-1800). Stunning 19th century walnut veneer frame.
Additional Comments
The fine, predominantly black, brown, cream, gold, green & blue silk thread used by Margaret - plus the exquisite quality of her work – suggests that she was from a relatively wealthy background. The composition of this large George IV piece is very typical of the period. Also representative, is Margaret’s choice of an 18th century verse - the beautiful message promoting a simple life has a very 21st Century resonance! William Cowper was an English poet & Anglican hymnwriter. One of the most popular poets of his time, Cowper changed the direction of 18th-century nature poetry by focusing on everyday rural life. He is considered one of the forerunners of Romantic poetry. The frame (plus period glass & hanging eyes) - itself a super antique - has been supplied by us. In our view, the quality & excellent, unmarked condition of this beautiful piece - in addition to the fact that it was completed nearly 200 years ago make it a very desirable example of this genre of sampler.
Conservation & Restoration
We have prepared ’s Margaret’s stunning sampler for sale by taking it from the later, tatty later frame in which it was acquired & removing the surface dust from it using a conservation vacuum cleaner. It has then been stitched onto complementary fresh linen which rests on cotton wadding glued to an acid free mount. All components of the sourced & resized period walnut veneered frame have been thoroughly cleaned & the veneer waxed. Finally, the sampler has been re-presented in its frame behind a piece of new board backing secured by stainless steel panel pins & sealed with self-adhesive picture framing tape. The piece is ready to hang using new (doubled) picture string attached to the frame’s original period eyes.
Framed Dimensions (W, H & D): 54x63x3cm
