Description
An exquisite, most unusual verse & motif silk on linen sampler in superb condition. Seven bands of upper/lower case
letters/numbers are neatly organised by simple, horizontal linear borders & are followed by a typically moralistic &
archaically expressed verse. The Sphinx Ligustri Privet (Hawk) Moth is exceptionally well-worked. Period 18th
Century ebonised frame & gilt slip.
Additional Comments
Eliza’s choice to feature the Sphinx Ligustri Privet (Hawk) Moth as her main motif, strongly suggests an educated
background! The moth is the UK’s largest & inhabits Southern Britain within woodland/suburban habitats during
June & July. Given the species was first described by Carl Linnaeus in his 1758 10th edition of Systema Naturae, Eliza
is remarkably well informed! Given its near 200 years of age, this sampler’s condition is impressive. The bright
colours of the silk are still very vivid with no discernible staining or fading. There is one small area of loss to the
ground (adjacent to the date) commensurate with the considerable antiquity of the piece.
Conservation & Restoration
We acquired this sampler unframed & have prepared it for sale by first removing the surface dust using a
conservation vacuum clearer. It has then been stitched onto complementary fresh linen which rests on cotton
wadding glued to an acid free mount. All components of the sourced period ebonised frame have been thoroughly
cleaned & waxed. Finally, the sampler has been re-presented within a behind a piece of early pine backing secured
by panel pins & sealed with self-adhesive picture framing tape. The piece is ready to hang using new (doubled)
picture string attached to the frame’s original period eyes.
Framed Dimensions (W, H & D): 29x38x2.5cm
