Edith has stitched this petite sampler on unusual white linen. Condition is exceptional: colours are very vivid with no discernible staining, fading or damage. Three bands of letters & numbers are followed by a biblical verse from Psalm 107:32-43.  Paired dog & diamond motifs beside a central crown, all surrounded by a linear border, complete the piece. Original period oak frame.

Additional Comments

Although undated, the piece has all the characteristics of a sampler of a late-19th century antiquity. This sampler has a real childlike charm: it looks like Edith may have mistakenly stitched a capital ‘S’ at the end of ‘Year’ - & later unpicked it?!  Edith’s colour palette is a particular feature with crimson, navy blue, green, gold & unusually purple all present.  The dark oak frame (plus gilt slip) - itself a super antique - appears to be the original whilst the glass is later. In our view, the superb condition of this beautiful, vibrant piece - in addition to the fact that it was probably completed over 140 years ago - make it a very desirable example of this genre of 19th century sampler.

Conservation & Restoration

We have prepared Edith’s charming sampler for sale by taking it from its frame & removing the surface dust using a conservation vacuum cleaner. It has then been stitched onto complementary fresh linen which rests on cotton wadding glued to an acid free mount. All components of the frame have been thoroughly cleaned & the oak waxed. Finally, the sampler has been re-presented in its frame behind a piece of bespoke recycled pine backing secured by stainless steel panel pins & sealed with self-adhesive picture framing tape. The piece is ready to hang using new (double) picture string attached to new brass eyes.

Framed Dimensions (W, H & D): 25x26x2.5cm
