This naïve sampler is stitched on a gauze & commemorates Queen Victoria’s Golden Jubilee (1837-1887). Exceptional condition with no discernible loss to the wool or ground. Various motifs: striking red house, deer, shrubs, urns, geometric shapes, crown. Two letter bands & Psalm 23 The Lord Is My Shepherd. Coloured triple horizontal dividing lines & border. Original rosewood veneer frame.

Additional Comments

Annie has chosen a palette of vibrant crimson, blues, gold, brown wool for her work which has a quite naive and ‘folksy’ feel.  The circa 19th century period frame (plus gilt slip & hanging eyes) - itself a super antique - appears to be original to the piece whilst the glass seems later. The sampler may have had an association with Liverpool in its past – see images of back. In our view, the undamaged clean condition of this beautiful, vibrant ‘folksy’ sampler - in addition to the fact that it was completed 135 years ago by a girl of just 12 - make it a very desirable example of this genre of sampler.

Conservation & Restoration

We have prepared Annie’s stunning sampler for sale by taking it from its frame & removing the surface dust using a conservation vacuum cleaner. It has then been stitched onto complementary fresh linen which rests on cotton wadding glued to an acid free mount. All components of the frame have been thoroughly cleaned & the veneer waxed. Finally, the sampler has been re-presented in its frame behind a pine backing secured by stainless steel panel pins & sealed with self-adhesive picture framing tape. The piece is ready to hang using new (double) picture string attached to the original period eyes.

Framed Dimensions (W, H & D): 37x38x2.5cm

Ref: S422
