Description

Exquisite, rare verse & motif silk on linen sampler in excellent condition.  1700s antiquity evidenced by the archaic form of language in the verse & the extensive use of the long 's' (f) which disappeared from British printing circa 1780-1800. Simplicity of style typically Quaker.  Verse - “Oh that mine eyes’ by the renowned Quaker Thomas Ellwood (1639 – 1714). Period rosewood veneer frame.

Additional Comments

The stitcher has created two blocks of verse & two (deliberately) plain, unstitched areas either side of a striking floral urn enclosed by a simple linear border stitched in gold thread. The whole is surrounded by a strong, strawberry border. Given its probable 250 plus years of age, this sampler’s condition is impressive.  The bright colours of the silk are still very vivid with no discernible staining or fading.  There are some small areas of loss to the ground commensurate with the considerable antiquity of the piece. Thomas Ellwood was as English religious writer also remembered for his relationship with poet John Milton.  It is common for Quaker Samplers not to have the name of the stitcher. However, this piece comes with excellent provenance.  It is from the family of Elizabeth Bevan, Members of the Blue Idol Quaker Meeting House near Billingshurst (Sussex).

Conservation & Restoration

We have prepared ’s this stunning sampler for sale by taking it from the dilapidated, c.20 frame in which it was acquired, then removing the surface dust using a conservation vacuum clearer. It has then been stitched onto complementary fresh linen which rests on cotton wadding glued to an acid free mount. All components of the sourced period frame have been thoroughly cleaned & the veneer waxed. Finally, the sampler has been re-presented within a period Rosewood veneer frame, behind a piece of early pine backing secured by stainless steel panel pins & sealed with self-adhesive picture framing tape. The piece is ready to hang using new (doubled) picture string attached to the frame’s original period eyes.

Framed Dimensions (W, H & D): 47x54x3.5cm
