Description
A vibrant, folksy, sampler in superb condition. Very skilful, fine stitch work. Unusual & diverse motifs including an elephant, cockerel, stunningly colourful floral urn plus a Shepherd & Shepherdess couple in traditional dress. The areas of unused or blank space & slightly disorganised feel suggest it was originally worked an experimental or practice piece. Period maple veneered oak frame.
Additional Comments
Although undated, the style of the motifs places it firmly as a mid to late 19th Century example. Striking white linen.
Conservation & Restoration
This delightful sampler was sold to us unframed. We have prepared it for sale by removing the surface dust using a conservation vacuum clearer. It has then been stitched onto cotton wadding glued to an acid free mount. All components of the especially sourced period frame have been thoroughly cleaned & waxed. Finally, the sampler has been re-presented in its frame behind a wooden backing secured by period steel panel nails & sealed with self-adhesive picture framing tape. The piece is ready to hang using new picture wire attached to new period eyes.
Framed Dimensions (W, H & D): 19x24x2.5cm
Ref: S41
