Description

This charming, vibrant sampler is in exceptional condition. The stitch work is most fine & completed by Mary when just 7! Four bands of letters & numbers, paired motifs (birds, urns & shrubs) plus a very well worked single dog & butterfly complement the characteristic dominant Georgian ‘red house’ complete with a delightful narrow manicured lawn. Original scumbled & ebonised scumbled frame.

Additional Comments

Five horizontally stitched, coloured geometric lines give structure to the sampler & the whole is enclosed by a trailing green & crimson border.  The colours are incredibly very well preserved & there is no discernible stitch loss or staining.  The piece is simply signed “Mary Hall aged 7 years, 1831.” Its fine quality suggests that Mary was from a relatively affluent background.  It was bought from a specialist Herefordshire sampler dealer.

Conservation & Restoration

We have prepared Mary’s stunning sampler for sale by taking it from its original frame & removing the surface dust using a conservation vacuum clearer. It has then been stitched onto complementary fresh linen which rests on cotton wadding glued to an acid free mount. All components of the frame have been thoroughly cleaned & the frame waxed. Finally, the sampler has been re-presented in its original frame behind the original period pine backing secured by stainless steel panel pins & sealed with self-adhesive picture framing tape. The piece is ready to hang using new (double) picture string attached to the original period eyes.

Framed Dimensions (W, H & D): 43x43x2.5cm

Ref: S15
