A typical mid-19th century sampler.  Exceptional condition with very vibrant colours & no discernible damage. Charming paired & individual motifs: dogs, shrubs & trees - plus a Georgian house all stitched on linen using an unusual palette of pastel blue, violet & crimson thread. Characteristic moralistic quotation (Psalm 27:10). Neat geometric border.   Original rosewood veneer frame.

Additional Comments

This charming almost folky sampler benefits from a huge amount of interest & conveys a very pleasing ambiance.  Whilst undated it has all the hallmarks of a Victorian sampler.  An interesting biblical quotation - “When my mother forsakes me then the Lord will take me up” – which is not often seen.  The frame (plus gilt slip & hanging eyes) - itself a super antique - appears to be unique to the piece whilst the glass seems later.  In our view, the undamaged clean condition of this beautiful, vibrant sampler - in addition to the fact that it was probably completed over 175 years ago - make it a very desirable example of this genre of sampler.

Conservation & Restoration

We have prepared this stunning sampler for sale by taking it from its frame & removing the surface dust using a conservation vacuum cleaner. It has then been stitched onto complementary fresh linen which rests on cotton wadding glued to an acid free mount. All components of the frame have been thoroughly cleaned & the veneer waxed. Finally, the sampler has been re-presented in its frame behind a period backing secured by stainless steel panel pins & thoroughly sealed with self-adhesive picture framing tape. The piece is ready to hang using a new (double) picture string attached to the original period eyes.

Framed Dimensions (W, H & D): 33x44x4.5cm

Ref: S3422
