Description
A pair of delightful fully signed or initialled Plain School Samplers in exceptional condition. Superb provenance - unusually the precise name of Rosa’s school is given. Rosa has clearly gone to great deal of trouble to showcase her needlework skills using a striking blue & red colour palette. The colours & fabric are very well preserved indeed with no damage. Period maple veneered frame.
Additional Comments
Given the inclusion of two dates (1886 & 1887) clearly Rosa completed her work over a period of (at least) a year!
Just some very minor age-related spotted staining/discoloration. One can imagine Rosa practicing hemming, darning, patching & seaming at her school - as a means of instilling in her the skills necessary for self-support & homemaking to produce the beautiful pieces of social history we see here today. In their workrooms young girls would have had needlework lessons where they would have been taught ‘plain sewing’ in so doing acquiring the skills necessary for making garments.
Conservation & Restoration
These beautiful antiques have been recently restored & re-presented. The two sampler pieces were unframed. The surface dust on the pieces have been carefully removed & then the samplers conserved by stitching them onto fresh complementary linen attached to fresh cotton wadding which has been glued to an acid free mount. They have then been reframed in a stunning frame - as a tribute to Rosa’ work and legacy! Finally, the sampler has been re-presented in its frame behind a bespoke backing, secured by stainless steel panel pins & sealed with self-adhesive picture framing tape. The piece is ready to display using a period hanging ring.
Framed Dimensions (W, H & D): 29.5x35.5x3cm
Ref: S22
