A rare and highly striking example – possibly a Snipe? ‘Decoys’ were placed with other similar birds (collectively known as a ‘rig’) either on a lakeside or riverbank (the case here) or floating to lure their wild and living counterparts towards the waiting sporting guns! This probable circa mid-20th century piece would have been placed in the ground via an extended wooden or metal stake inserted into a hole in the decoy’s base – here mounted 38cms high on a fragment of antique elm. Lovely original condition & still vibrant yet aged paint.
Dimensions of the bird (L, H & W): 26x11x8cm
Ref: FA422
