A rare and highly striking type of decoy made of card. ‘Decoys’ were placed with other similar birds (collectively known as a ‘rig’) either on a lakeside or riverbank to lure their wild and living counterparts towards the waiting sporting guns! This probable circa mid-20th century piece would have been placed in the ground via an extended metal stake inserted into the two small rectangular recesses to the duck’s side – here mounted 38cms high on a fragment of antique pine. Lovely original condition & still vibrant yet aged paint.
Dimensions of the bird (L, H & W): 48x24x9cm. With its stand the piece is 27cm high.
