Description
A rare George III sampler petite silk sampler on a linen ground. Exceptional condition considering its 200 years antiquity. Comprises six bands of numbers & letters (lower/upper case) plus six petit geometric motifs. Verse is extracted from the hymn ‘For infant minds’: ‘The Morning hours of cheerful light’ (published 1813 by ‘PM’ - Source: hymnary.org). Original period maple veneer frame.
Additional Comments
Interestingly, Amelia seems to have overestimated how much space would be needed for the verse – hence the small blank area to the right!? The whole is finished in a striking, very straight linear floral border in still very vivid black thread. The diverse black, blue, gold, brown, pink & crimson colours are still remarkably vibrant & the stitchwork remarkably intact. There are some very small areas of loss to ground but these do not detract from the quality & integrity of the piece. In terms of provenance, Amelia has very precisely located her sampler in La Feock (Truro), Cornwall. The subject matter & very fine quality of the stitching & constituent material suggest Amelia came from an affluent & well-educated background.
Conservation & Restoration
We have prepared Amelia’s charming sampler for sale by taking it from its original frame & removing the surface dust using a conservation vacuum clearer. It has then been stitched onto complementary fresh linen which rests on cotton wadding glued to an acid free mount. All components of the frame have been thoroughly cleaned & the frame waxed. Finally, the sampler has been re-presented in its frame behind its original pine backing, secured by stainless steel panel pins & sealed with self-adhesive picture framing tape. The piece is ready to hang using new (double) picture string attached to early period eyes.
Framed Dimensions (W, H & D): 23x29x2.5cm
Ref: S11
