Description

An exceptionally fine, part polychrome sampler. Enduring vivid colours. Especially impressive centre with intricately stitched urns & shrubs stitched in cream, pink, dark green & gold polychrome silk. Well-used verse for samplers of this period: Ecclesiastes 12 verse 1 - ‘Remember now thy Creator in the days of thy youth.’ Original ebonised & scumbled pine frame.  Early hand blown ‘bobbly’ glass.

Additional Comments

Margret has produced an exceptionally fine piece with very skilful stitch work throughout.  There is a huge amount going on!  To the top we have two of bands of letters which appear to be family initials with a lone crown motif to the top right. The central verse reads in full: “Remember now thy Creator in the days of thy youth, while the evil days come not, nor the years draw nigh, when thou shalt say, I have no pleasure in them.”  To the base are some stunning motifs: a classic Georgian red brick detached house (pictured) behind a manicured lawn, upon which rest six geometric dogs & ornamental trees.  Further family initials sit above. The whole is then enclosed within an immaculately stitched gold geometric strawberry border. Given its 220 plus years of age, overall condition is excellent with just some stitch & ground loss to the central area of verse - in our view this does not detract from the piece & contributes to its air of antiquity.  Indeed, the sampler has the feel of a much earlier 18th century piece. The sampler is simply signed; “Margret Maxwell x1803.’’ Given its quality & the silks used there seems little doubt that Margret was from an affluent background.

Conservation & Restoration

We have prepared Margret’s stunning sampler for sale by taking it from its original frame & removing the surface dust using a conservation vacuum clearer – the original backing paper was retrieved retaining imprints of Margret’s work & this will be made available to the purchaser. It has then been stitched onto complementary fresh linen which rests on cotton wadding glued to an acid free mount. All components of the frame have been thoroughly cleaned & the frame itself waxed. Finally, the sampler has been re-presented in its frame behind its original pine backing, secured by stainless steel panel pins & sealed with self-adhesive picture framing tape. The piece is ready to hang using new (double) picture string attached to early period eyes.

Framed Dimensions (W, H & D): 32x36x3cm
