Description
A charming, George III sampler in excellent condition. Vibrant thread colours & superbly fine skilful stitch work throughout – especially remembering Matilda was just 12 years old! The first two verses of Psalm 23 (The Lord My Pasture Shall Prepare) dominates the piece. Great variety of paired motifs - crowns, urns – plus (more rarely) windmills & deer. Original period maple veneered frame.
Additional Comments
In terms of provenance, the sampler is simply signed “Matilda Smith Aged 12 Years 1828”. There are only some very small losses to the ground & age-related darkening in one place. Given the fine nature of the needlework & the quality of the constituent materials, it is likely that Matilda came from a relatively wealthy background.
Conservation & Restoration
We have prepared Matilda’s stunning sampler for sale by taking it from its original frame & removing the surface dust using a conservation vacuum clearer. It has then been stitched onto complementary fresh linen which rests on cotton wadding glued to an acid free mount. All components of the frame have been thoroughly cleaned & the veneer waxed. Finally, the sampler has been re-presented in its frame behind new replacement hardboard backing, secured by stainless steel panel pins & sealed with self-adhesive picture framing tape. The piece is ready to hang using new (double) picture string attached to the original period eyes.
Framed Dimensions (W, H & D): 44x55x3cm
Ref: S27
