Description
Catherine has stitched this fine needlework sampler on a linen ground. Its condition is exceptional, with still amazingly vibrant colours. The upper & lower case lettering plus symmetrical floral & paired lion motifs are very skilfully executed all being surrounded by an unusual double strawberry border. Hymn by Isaac Watts, (1674-1748). 19th century maple veneer frame.
Additional Comments
Judging by the fine predominantly gold, green, brown & crimson silk thread used by ‘Catherine Jackson’ - plus the exquisite quality of her work – it seems likely that she was from a relatively wealthy background. The composition of this large George III piece is very typical of the period. Also representative, is Catherine’s choice of verse which originates from the hymn: ‘In All My Vast Concerns With Thee.’ Curiously, the thread of second verse seems to be a little darker than the first, but close inspection reveals no sign of any ‘bleeding’.
In All My Vast Concerns With Thee
In Vain My Soul Would Try
To Shun Thy Presence, Lord, Or Flee
The Notice Of Thine Eye.
Thy All-Surrounding Sight Surveys
My Rising And My Rest My Public Walks
My Private Ways
The Secrets Of My Breast
There are very minor areas of ground loss above the right lion motif & lower border. The frame (plus 19th century glass, gilt slip & hanging eyes) - itself a super antique - has been supplied by us. In our view, the quality & excellent, unmarked condition of this beautiful sampler - in addition to the fact that it was completed nearly 200 years ago by a girl of just 8 years old - make it a very desirable example of this genre of sampler.
Conservation & Restoration
We have prepared ’s Catherine’s stunning sampler for sale by taking it from the later, tatty later frame in which it was acquired, removing the surface dust from it using a conservation vacuum cleaner. It has then been stitched onto complementary fresh linen which rests on cotton wadding glued to an acid free mount. All components of the sourced & resized period maple frame have been thoroughly cleaned & the veneer waxed. Finally, the sampler has been re-presented in its frame behind a piece of new hardboard backing secured by stainless steel panel pins & sealed with self-adhesive picture framing tape. The piece is ready to hang using new (doubled) picture string attached to the frame’s original period eyes.
Framed Dimensions (W, H & D): 46x55x4cm
