Description

Mary has most skilfully & painstakingly stitched her trailing floral & leaf motifs on unusual green linen; both these & her extract from Ecclesiastes, are in exceptional condition with amazingly vibrant colours & no loss to the ground or staining.  The beautiful scumbled frame appears to be original & complements the exquisite needlework perfectly. The imperfect, bobby, glass is also very early.

Additional Comments

The fine, black, gold & green thread used by Mary - plus the exquisite quality of her work – suggests that she was from a wealthy background.  The floral & leaf composition of this large George II piece is very typical of the period. Also representative, is Mary’s choice of a religious verse (there is some stitch loss to just three letters) promoting the importance of a Godfearing life. Apart from the biblical extract & date, the twice used long 's' (f) which disappeared from British printing between 1780 and 1800 (see lines 4 & 6) also support an early 18th Century attribution. In our view, the quality & excellent, unmarked condition of this beautiful piece - in addition to the fact that it was completed nearly over 280 years ago make it a highly desirable example of this genre of sampler. It is fresh to the digital market.

Conservation & Restoration

We have prepared ’s Mary’s stunning sampler for sale by taking it from its almost certainly original frame & removing the surface dust from it using a conservation vacuum cleaner. All components of the frame have been thoroughly cleaned & veneer waxed. Finally, the sampler has been re-presented in its frame behind a piece of replacement one backing  board backing secured by stainless steel panel pins & sealed with self-adhesive picture framing tape. The piece is ready to hang using new (doubled) picture string attached to early period eyes.

Framed Dimensions (W, H & D): 30x28x2 cm
