Description
A very pretty early sampler in exceptional condition. Neat & well executed stitch work. Superbly preserved colours with no discolouration or loss to the thread or ground. Paired tree, shrub, flower, songbird, crown motifs – plus far more rarely seen central squirrels! Some randomly stitched geometric shapes. Stunning, striking, dominant pinkish colour palette. Original maple veneered frame.
Additional Comments
Although undated this small silk on linen sampler has all the features of a William IV Regency or very early Victorian example dating from circa 1830/40. “EH” has stitched her initials to the centre. Given its quality & the silks used, there seems little doubt that the stitcher was from a relatively affluent background.
Conservation & Restoration
We have prepared “EH’s” sampler for sale by taking it from its original frame & removing the surface dust using a conservation vacuum clearer. It has then been stitched onto complementary fresh linen which rests on cotton wadding glued to an acid free mount. All components of the frame have been thoroughly cleaned & the frame itself waxed. Finally, the sampler has been re-presented in its frame behind a wooden backing, secured by stainless steel panel pins & sealed with self-adhesive picture framing tape. The piece is ready to hang using new picture string attached to steel eyes.
Framed Dimensions (W, H & D): 29x33.5x2cm
Ref: S21
